Not So Fishy Fish Stew

G-d bless my grandmother. A can of salmon and a bottle of grape juice for shalach manos. She said it's the most practical shalach manos. Can't argue with that. Or her. Ever. Kidding. Anyhow, I usually make (fried) salmon patties with canned salmon, but I was sick of that and wanted something a little more healthy. So this is the result, and I actually like it:

2 onions, chopped
3 cloves garlic, crushed
canola oil for frying
2 sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
1 bag chick peas, cooked (I guess you could use the equivalent amount canned)
2 can diced tomatoes
2 Tbsp garam masala
2 heaped tsp salt
cayenne pepper to taste
1 can salmon (I remove the slimy stuff and bones because it's nauseating)

Fry onion and garlic in oil. Add sweet potatoes, chick peas, canned tomatoes. Mix. Mix through garam masala. Add 2-3 cups water. Bring to boil. Simmer 1/2 hour. Add salmon, salt, and cayenne pepper. Let simmer additional 10+ minutes. You can let it simmer the rest of the day, or until you're ready to eat it. I think.
